# Week #3 Update

Thus far our journey through Barrett's hospitalization has been hallmarked by significant leaps forward in his recovery. Unfortunately this past week was marred by our first setback.

Barrett was extubated (taken off of the breathing tube/ventilator) on 08/01 which is a significant post-surgical milestone. Once extubated post-Norwood babies are generally using their own hearts and lungs unassisted to oxygenate their blood.

Barrett was unable to stabilize in the days following, and had multiple episodes of tachypnea (rapid breathing) and tachycardia (rapid heart rate) and had to be reintubated on 08/06\. Though this is a step backwards in regards to his overall recovery, the goal is to use this time for him to stabilize, rest, and continue to increase in size (after the repeat intubation he is now stable and able to take breast milk again). 

We know this will not be the last setback throughout this season of life, and the process of recovery is non-linear and often slower than what we've experienced until this point. We continue to pray for good news and will wait patiently for an answer.
