About Us

We're the Schram family — Shannon, Mike, and our daughter Evelyn. We live in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, and this page is for our son, Barrett, and for the family and friends walking through this season of life with us.

Barrett Schram

At our 14-week ultrasound, we learned that Barrett has a heart condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome — HLHS for short. In plain terms, the left side of his heart didn't form the way it typically does, so it can't do its share of the pumping. More simply put, he will be born with "half a heart." The path ahead is a series of three open-heart surgeries, beginning in his very first days of life, that will reroute the way his heart moves blood. Barrett is due to be born at Duke Hospital in late July of 2026, where he will receive his first open-heart surgery after birth, and be cared for in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU for the months after.

We started this site for a simple reason: so the people who love Barrett can follow his health, surgeries, and recovery. We'll share frequent updates here — how he's doing, how each surgery goes, and many of the ordinary, wonderful things in between.
