Step-Down
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." - James 1:2-4
After just over a month in the Duke PCICU (Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit), Barrett has been transferred to the "step-down" ICU! This is a separate space for patients who are more medically stable and who are being prepared for discharge. We still have no concrete news about Barrett's discharge date, but we're optimistic that our son will be home with us by the end of September.
Leaving the familiarity of the PCICU and the standard of care was a significant adjustment for all of us. Barrett had some intermittent issues with tolerating breast milk after the transfer that were resolved by some additional GI tests, and after a full week over here, he's is now back to eating his goal breast milk volume daily. Gaining weight is one of the prerequisites for discharge so we're thrilled that he is back on track with feeding.
Our goals between now and discharge are simple: for Barrett to gain some weight, continue to practice some traditional feeding methods, and to spend as much time in our arms as possible. If things continue on this trajectory, I believe we'll be sharing some incredibly special news in the coming weeks!
Another immense thank you to all the friends and family who have supported us throughout this journey, be it prayers, meals, or simply your kind words. We appreciate all of you and are thankful to God for your work in his plan for our son.
