Chest Closure

Chest Closure

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it" - Proverbs 4:23

After a mere 48 hours Barrett has already healed enough from his Norwood operation for the follow-up chest closure procedure.

After the Norwood operation the chest cavity is purposefully left open covered only by bandage. This is intentional as it allows the now modified heart to beat freely without additional pressure from the swollen chest tissue pressing down on it. Additionally this allows the surgical team "easy access" if they need to follow up, clean out the surgical area, or in the worst case, address an infection.

Fortunately for us Barrett healed exceptionally well from his Norwood and the quick turn around for chest closure is the result of that. The procedure was performed the morning of 07/26/2026 and completed in around 2 hours without issue - his vitals all remained in good ranges upon closure and he is in stable condition. Some black bandaging is currently visible in the "after" photo above, but when he is fully healed all that will remain is a vertical surgical scar on his chest.

Below is a "before" photo showing what Barrett looked like after his Norwood surgery, with his chest still open. I caution you that this is relatively graphic and may be difficult for those with certain sensitivities to look at. That said, I think it is important to realistically depict what my son has endured, so that he may someday inspire others.
